Interactive Session of PU ISSER held

Dr. Janak Palta Mc Gilligan, a PU Alumna and recipient of Padma Shri Award, visited Panjab University Institute of Social Science Education and Research(PU-ISSER) for a special Interactive Session with the students on “Understanding Sustainability: A Lived Experience.
Dr. Janak Palta shared with the students that all her life has been an experience in sustainability in terms of physical resources and human relations. She narrated her experiences at Rio where she had won global roll of honour which motivated her further to connect with society. She took upon herself to contribute in generating self-sufficiency I food production, food self sufficiency, harnessing solar energy and building a waste free community. She was supported in her efforts by the tribal women and also her husband who helped in building a self sustainable community of tribal women. Dr Palta emphasized technology provides with information and we habe to translate that information into wisdom to find solution to the global environmental crisis.
Dr Janak was accompanied by Ms. Jena, a mechanical engineer from Texas, America. Ms Jena played a double flute for the students and also shared her learning experiences from India.
Dr Janak Palta McGilligan is a founder Director BARLI Institute for development of Tribal Women, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Dr Palta is also the Director of Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development. She has also written a book on Barli Development Institute for Rural Women: An Alternative Model of Women’s Empowerment in India. She has also developed seven curriculum books. The Government of India in 2015, awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award She was also awarded with Rajmata Vijaraje Sindhiya Social Service Award by Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2008.
