Rinku Kalia, renowned vocalist and winner of Zee TV’s musical show “Sa Re Ga Ma”, brought alive the pathos and agony of legendary Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi poetry at a special concert at the Punjab Kala Bhavan
Aptly titled “Birha da Sultan—a musical tribute to Shiv Kumar Batalvi”, the musical show, which was organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Haryana, S-4 Trust and the Punjab Arts Council, saw the acclaimed singer render some of the poetic gems of Punjab’s best-known poet with aplomb before a select audience.
Kicking off with “raat gae kar tara tara”, Rinku continued the sombre mood with “peedan da paraga”, “shikra yaar”, “ki puchh deo haal” and “main kandiali thor” even as a discerning audience hungered more.Sensing mood of the audience, she switched over to light romantic numbers, “aaj din chadya”, “mainu tera shabbab” and “ik kudi” before concluding with a sonorous sad number “eh mera geet”.
Punjab’s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu was the chief guest while Chairman of the Punjab Arts Council Surjit Patar and Rajiv Jain, Haryana CM’s Media Adviser, were guest of honour. Aruna Batalvi, wife of Shiv Kumar Batalvi, was special guest.
Senior broadcaster BS Malik compered the programme, which was dedicated to noted art promoter late Prof Rajpal Singh, with admirable competence.
